The rainforests of the Virunga Volcanoes are the last refuge of the Mountain Gorilla. The Virungas span Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the Parc National des Volcans being the Rwandan element of this ecosystem.

The lush slopes of the volcanoes provide an appropriately dramatic natural setting for what is perhaps the most thrilling wildlife experience to be had anywhere; seeing the Mountain Gorillas in their natural habitat. Seven habituated families of gorillas are visited, and these families have from seven to over thirty-five individuals in each group.

On arrival at the hotel, check in the hotel then later in the afternoon you will be transferred to visit the two scenic lakes usually referred to as the twin lakes; Lake Bulera and Lake Ruhonda. They are fed by rivers and a lake in Uganda. The twin lakes area is very scenic, with steep and intensively farmed hills surrounding the pristine dark blue waters. They offer magnificent views over the whole of the Virunga Volcanoes.

Day 2: Gorilla Tracking & Local Experiences

Brief of the day: Early breakfast at 6 am then transfer to the park at 7 am for briefings and grouping. After completing our park formalities, we embark on a once in a lifetime experience of tracking mountain gorillas.

Once you spot them you are allowed to spend an hour watching your closest long lost cousin. This is perhaps one of the most breathtaking wildlife experiences on earth!!! You get so close to these awesome giant primates. You stare at each other blankly not knowing who to break the long silence first. Tracking the gorillas through the light mountain forest on the slopes of the Virunga is a magical experience.

Be back at the base in time for lunch! Some gorilla families however are more elusive and tracking can take a full day, especially when it is wet and muddy. Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable forest. Dinner and overnight.

Other options to choose from are visiting Buhanga forest in the afternoon where all the Rwanda kings were initiated or Kinigi Cultural Village for traditional dances and music, bio-mimicry and traditional healing lessons.

Accommodation: Gorilla Valley Lodge

Day 3: Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Today is yet another big day as you prepare yourself for an encounter with one of Bwindi’s gentle giants: the rare mountain gorillas. For most people, this is the absolute highlight of their tour in Uganda. You start off with an early morning breakfast and briefing before entering the thick Bwindi forest to track gorillas.

On your hike towards the gorillas, your guide will point out signs of previous gorilla activity, including dung, nests and chewed bamboo shoots.

The time taken to track the gorillas can be as few as 2 hours to as many as 8 hours. Your track will be an exciting journey along forested slopes, entwined vines, bushes and bamboo before you eventually reach the gorilla family. Once the gorillas have been located, your group will be allowed a maximum of one hour with them. Coming face-to-face with a mountain gorilla is a truly humbling and emotional experience.

This is a fantastic and privileged opportunity to get up close and personal with Uganda’s very own ‘Gorillas in the Mist’.

Accommodation: Gorilla Valley lodges.

Day 4: Depart for Kigali

After a sumptuous breakfast, you will be transferred back to Kigali Airport for your outbound flight. If time permits you will pay a visit to the genocide memorial in Kigali and transfer to the airport for your onward flight marking the end of your combined Uganda Rwanda Gorilla safari.
